| Swinburne has always paid special attention to works of art. From the beginning with the Founder and first president of Council, George Swinburne, to the present day, art works have been acquired. Paintings, photographs, sculptures, furniture, tapestries, plus other artefacts and architectural features have been added to the collection over the nearly one hundred years of Swinburne’s existence.
The works in the collection are varied and in different media, from paintings, commissioned portraits, photographs, a specially-commissioned tapestry, furniture to sculptures. In the main, the collection and acquisition focus has been on 'Swinburne' artists, many prominent in Australia and internationally.
